Is this image resizer really free?

Yes. There is no account, no watermark, no daily cap and no paid tier on this tool. It runs entirely on your own machine, so there is no per-image cost for us to pass on.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The file is read locally and every operation — the crop, the resize and the final encode — runs through the canvas API in your browser. Nothing is transmitted, stored or logged. You can confirm it by opening your network tab, or by resizing an image with your Wi-Fi switched off.

Will resizing reduce the quality of my image?

Making an image smaller is essentially lossless to the eye: it discards pixels you were not going to see at the new size. Quality loss comes from two other places — enlarging beyond the original resolution, and aggressive JPG or WebP compression. Keep the quality slider at 80 or above and downscaled results stay crisp.

What is the difference between Crop, Fit and Stretch?

They only matter when the size you asked for has a different aspect ratio than your image. Crop fills the frame edge to edge and trims the overflow from the sides, which is what you usually want for a social post. Fit keeps the entire image visible and pads the leftover space. Stretch forces the exact dimensions and distorts the picture, which is rarely what you want but is occasionally required by a strict template.

Which file formats can I use?

You can bring in JPEG, PNG and WebP, and write back out to any of the three. Pick the output format independently of the input, so converting a PNG screenshot to a smaller WebP is a single pass.

Does it keep transparency?

PNG and WebP output both preserve the alpha channel. JPG cannot store transparency at all, so transparent areas are filled with white before encoding — choose PNG if you need a cutout to stay see-through.

What are the file size and resolution limits?

Up to 30 MB and 24 megapixels going in, and up to 50 megapixels coming out. Those ceilings exist because the browser holds the whole bitmap in memory; larger files risk crashing the tab on modest hardware.

Can I resize by percentage instead of pixels?

Yes. Switch the unit toggle from px to %, and the width and height fields become a share of the original. Entering 50 gives you an image half as wide and half as tall.

How do I stop the image from being distorted?

Leave the lock button between the width and height fields switched on. With it enabled, editing one dimension recalculates the other from the original aspect ratio. Choosing a preset unlocks it automatically, since a preset is an explicit request for a different shape.

Can I resize several images at once?

Not in this tool — it handles one image at a time so the preview stays immediate. For a large batch, script it against a library such as Pillow or sharp, which will apply identical settings across a whole folder.

Why is my resized file larger than the original?

Almost always a format change. Re-encoding a compressed JPG as a PNG stores it losslessly and the file grows, sometimes several times over. Saving back to JPG or WebP will bring it down. Raising the quality slider above the source image’s own compression level does the same thing on a smaller scale.

Tips For Best Results

Small choices that decide whether a resized image looks sharp or washed out

For social posts, start from the preset

Platforms re-compress anything that does not match their expected size, which is where the mushy edges come from. Hitting the exact preset means the only resize is the one you controlled.

Shrinking is safe, enlarging is not

Going down in size discards pixels and stays sharp. Going up can only invent them, so a small image scaled past roughly 2x will look soft. For that, run it through the AI upscaler instead.

Chase a file-size limit with quality, not pixels

If you are 200 KB over an upload cap, drop JPG quality to around 75 before you cut dimensions. Most photos lose almost nothing visible between 100 and 75, and the file often halves.

Match the format to the picture

Photographs belong in JPG or WebP. Logos, screenshots, flat illustrations and anything with transparency belong in PNG — a JPG will fringe the hard edges and fill the alpha with white.
